The characters in the play are mostly based on people I met in the Youth Theatre. Of course now the actors have made them their own, especially as they don’t look like any of the real people. But today i’ve got to write some new bits of dialogue for them - to go out on mobile phones. It’s really weird now, like phone calls writing for real people.

It’s a proper run-through of the play, with some important people present. I’m really nervous about this so I get two of my own teenagers to come along for support. Of course the minute we arrive I start to feel nervous about what my kids think of it. Therefore I’ve doubled my own nervousness. Plus my kids don’t laugh all the way through. Even when everyone else is laughing they don’t join in. I ask them why not. They said they were too nervous. Basically theatre is all about nerves.
